Montgomery County has developed a reputation as the place to be for those who are attracted to the great outdoors. Its hunting fishing and hiking opportunities offer outstanding possibilities in traditional pursuits, while a wide array oif additional activities present appeling options to charm not only active enthusiasts but also those who enjoy their recreation as spectators
Blacksburg Bikeway and Walkway
Developed in 1989 the bikeway and walkway allow for commuting between downtown and Virginia Tech.
Brush Mountain
Located just outside Blacksburg town limits northwest of the Virginia Tech campus this mountain includes a scenic ridge trail and trails that descend to Pandapas Pond. The Audie Murphy Memorial is also located on Brush Mountain at the site where the World War II Veteran and actor was killed in a plane crash.
Ellett Valley Nature Trail
A self-guiding nature trail that was used by local residents for farming in the early 1900s. Through the decades, the barren land has flourished developing an eastern climax hardwood forest. The trail includes: the earth awareness trail, the micro trail, and an activity area.
Huckleberry Trail
Following the old railroad route, the paved trail connects the Blacksburg Bikeway and the Walkway System of Christiansburg.

Jefferson National Forest

Mountain Lake Wilderness
Designated the Mountain Lake Wilderness in 1984 it now has a total of 11,035 acres. The smash-hit motion picture, Dirty Dancing was filmed at the resort located here. The lake is one of only 2 natural lakes in Virginia.

Nature Conservancy’s Falls Ridge Preserve
A breath taking 30 meter travertine waterfall, old limekiln and caves can all be found on the 655 acres of this “Rare Ecosystem”
The New River
Designated as a State Scenic River, the New River is the second oldest river in the world (only the Nile is older.) Also one of the few rivers that flows northward.
New River Junction
Whitewater rafting, kayaking, canoeing, tubing, fishing, and horseback riding on and along the New River can all be found at the New River Junction.

The Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail
Commemorates the 1780 campaign that led to the battle of Kings Mountain. The battle was a key turning point in the American Revolution. 2635 Park Road, Blacksburg, VA 24060
Pandapas Pond
The man-made impoundment at the headwaters of Poverty Creek is maintained by the Forest Service and the Wildlife Society of Virginia. A one mile trail circles the pond, on which hiking, bike riding, and horseback riding is allowed.
